One of the many benefits that the Space Age has brought along is satellite communication. There are numerous other spin-offs – the microwave oven, the computer, photo-voltaic cells, thermal blankets, ceramic heat shields and many more. Today satellite communication is used for global positioning, enabling one to know one’s position to within 10cm, for digital radio and television, the Internet, telecommunications as well as many military uses. Not so very long ago it was beyond any fleet manager’s dream to be able to know where any one of his vehicles was at any given time. Today, by using the GPS system he not only knows where each of his vehicles is, but he can also monitor their speed, when and where they stop, and even know the temperature in the rear of a refrigerated truck.
Satellite communication has altered the way we live, not just in first world countries, but even in the poorest of countries, where for the first time ever there can be communication deep in the bush where there is no electricity whatsoever. Through satellite communication we are able to plot the position of those lonely round-the-world yachts, and indeed are able to chat to their skippers. You now no longer need worry about lending your teenager the car, since you can monitor its whereabouts minute by minute. The GPS communication set-up can also be used for keeping track of valuable assets such as laptop computers. If you’d like to know more about our technology, especially where tracking and monitoring is concerned
