The Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) is a satellite based, near real time, positional tracking system for monitoring the location of vessels equipped with the appropriate technology. The ‘appropriate technology’ can be fitted to any vessel from a private yacht to a fishing vessel and right up to a bulk carrier, enabling secure vessel monitoring 24/7 from anywhere on Earth. Secure vessel monitoring is being used extensively in some countries and enables authorities to track the activity of commercial fishing vessels for example. This means that illegal fishing activity, such as incursions into protected waters, can be promptly identified - a significant deterrent to would-be cheats.
Secure vessel monitoring uses the standard GPS satellites to keep track of any vessel or item that is fitted with one of our GPS units. The GPS units are easy to install – you can even keep track of an individual shipping container. Many systems also combine a communications component such as cellular or satellite transmitters to communicate the vessel’s location to a remote user. Vessel information can be viewed on electronic maps via the Internet or specialized software. Secure vessel monitoring enables the location data to be made available for viewing more often than not with many of the solutions sold today, via a website, accessed over the Internet, where vessel activity can be viewed live or historically using digital maps and reports. Skygistics provides a monitoring system that offers real-time tracking and communication throughout Africa and Australia and their entire coastal waters.
